Marc Freedman's new book applies to ANYONE ready to change careers for a more satisfying experience.
Book Review: Encore - Finding Work that Matters in the Second Half of Life. Written by Marc Freedman. Published by PublicAffairs, New York, NY. Online Publicity by FSB Associates.
Although billed as a self-help book for those entering the "second half of life" - Marc Freedman's Encore:Finding Work That Matters In The Second Half Of Life actually is for anyone who is ready to give back to both community and self- fulfillment, rather than just take or climb the regular ladder to financial success. Filled with real people's successful transformations, Mr. Freedman explains the recent phenomenon of those who are not ready to retire according to the old rules of work, and who can and do contribute so much to the continued growth of society.
This is not just another book on the aging but willing population of North America - this book actually marks out a path for BOTH the aging Baby Boomers and up-and-coming working youth. Mr. Freedman shows how both can work together. Rather than state the tired, out-dated view that the old must go to make way for the new (or that the old still can contribute), he gives concrete examples of those already working side by side in this new transformation of "work". Doom-sayers and nay-sayers beware! Mr. Freedman is able to provide concrete examples of a new lifestyle that changes the rules of a supposed downward spiral. His analysis is astute and innovative - and would easily be a ground-breaking provable thesis in political science or sociology. However, this book deals with the practical(as it should): the theory is secondary to the theme - so that the reader can understand the background and more readily see the future, and how it pertains to the reader's (your) future.
While uplifting as others' examples are, you might start wondering how YOU can create your own path in a new career. No problem - Mr. Freedman provides a full section in the Appendix to get you going on your new choice of career - how to start, what to ask, where to go. This section is excellent for anyone thinking about a career change - not just those with loads of experience. Caution though, you will actually have to think and do some soul-searching as to what you really want to do (everything that any good Career Advice counsellor will tell you to do!).
The style is easy to read - yet not insulting to those more educated. Personal stories of many "Encore" careers are showcased, with both highs and lows examined. This book is highly recommended for anyone thinking of changing careers!
