Sometimes it's hard to know when it's time to look for a new job or change careers. Here are eight sure indications that it is time to make a change.

If you work 40 hours per week, 50 weeks out of a year for a total of forty years, you’ll end up working about 80,000 hours in your lifetime. Yikes! Sounds like a lot of working doesn’t it? Because we do spend so much of our lives working, it is very important that we enjoy, are passionate and feel good about the work we do on a daily basis. If you have been considering a career or job change, here are 8 clear indications that a change is in order.

  1. You struggle getting up in the morning because you don’t want to go to work. Now this is an old cliché’ but a very true one. Everyone struggles with getting up some mornings, and everyone goes through a period(s) of dissatisfaction at work. But when you find yourself continuously regretting showing up for work, it’s time to go job hunting.
  2. Co-workers and even superiors are commenting about your job dissatisfaction. Sometimes no matter how hard you try, your emotions become obvious to others around you. If your colleagues recognize how unhappy you are, you need to recognize how urgent your need to make a change is.
  3. Your work is suffering. If your unhappiness has begun to affect your work performance, it is definitely time to make a move. Remember, you may need to use your current employer as a reference in the future.
  4. You’re having trouble staying awake at work because you’re so bored. This could be an indication that you’ve mastered the skills needed for your job and it’s time for a new challenge. Before boredom turns into unhappiness, seek a more challenging opportunity.
  5. You’ve tried to get along with your boss, but it’s obvious that you and him/her are not a good working pair. If you know your boss is not going anywhere, don’t prolong the separation. Instead, do your best to leave on amicable terms. This could mean simply a change to another department.
  6. Work may possibly be making you physically ill. Many experience headaches, stomach trouble and insomnia when they are unhappy at work. It’s just not worth it to compromise your health. Find a job or career you’re happy with and start feeling well again.
  7. Your husband/wife, family and friends are tired of hearing you complain about work. If your problems and unhappiness at work has become all consuming, it is seriously time to make a change.
  8. You resent your boss, the company you work for and even your salary. In fact, you can’t find one positive thing to say about your job. Delay no longer, it’s time for a change.
