Hate going into work, feel like you're dragging your feet and just can't muster much enthusiasm for the work you used to love? It might be time to change careers!
While February does bring winter doldrums, the lack of sunshine may not be the only culprit weighing your spirit down. If you dread going into work, it might not just be that job or environment, it may be it's time to change careers.
WHAT? I'm too old, too tired, too bored, too inadequate to find other work. Besides, how would I know what to look for and in what field? How can I still earn the income I'm used to getting if I start over???
Relax - changing careers is NOT necessarily starting over - but it IS enhancing what you already know and do! Now, I'm not talking about going from being a salesclerk to being a veterinarian (but that IS a possible and reachable goal). I am talking about reaching further into what you already do and know best - and that can be expanding what you do already for a living OR even expanding a favourite pastime or hobby into a full-time career shift.
And shift is the operative word here. You need to shift your mindset - away from what you CAN'T do, and focus on what you CAN do. The first step of course, is to look above you - and I am not being metaphorical here - literally, look on your company's organization chart - see if you LIKE any of the job titles - and then do a bit of research to see if you'd like that JOB. Check out the internet (job sites are great for this) to get an understanding of that job title; talk to your Human Resource or Personnel department to see if they have an official job description for that job title; and of course, talk to the actual person who DOES that job right now.
Does this new job sound interesting, intriguing? IF so, then ask HOW to get there from here - and yes, this does mean you will probably have to move to another company: often the best way to move on up is to move on out - for some reason companies often feel bringing in an "outsider" will also bring in a fresh point of view. And if you aren't too happy where you are right now (which is why you are considering a career change in the first place), then a new company is where you want to be.
Another great career change to consider is to TRAIN OTHERS in your field. Most companies (Colleges included) want people who have already been in the trenches to train their employees - they want you to tell others about potential mistakes and possible solutions - and it is far more believable coming from someone who has already been there than from some hot-shot with a great degree but no experience who can spout theory but not practical/own knowledge advice. So turn that experience into your personal success. Again - this is a mind shift - you CAN train others - as long as you recognize you'll need patience, tact, and more patience and tact while the others are learning.
So, ready to tackle the change?
