You know where you want to go, now how can you get there? Some tips on how to change your career.
Congratulations! You've decided to take that big step - you realize you want (and perhaps need, due to downsizing) to change your career path, and you even know what you want to pursue. So, how to get there from here?
The first step is realizing you already HAVE completed the first step - you have made a conscious decision to change career paths. You even have a good idea of what you want to now pursue in your quest for switching your career. Now, you must ensure you have right qualifications for that new job or career. Thinking you do is not enough; if you want to have a smooth transition (with little downtime, or time without pay or less pay that previous), you need to hedge your bets on all sides.
Have you researched your potential new career - what is needed in terms of day to day routine work, and what is needed for those special or extra projects? Talk to others (if at all possible) who actually DO work in this new area of career choice to get a better idea of what is really required. Check out internet postings on your career change. And DO NOT abandon your choice if you realize you may not have exactly what it takes - that's where the next step comes into play.
What do you need to know/what skills do you need to do the new career appropriately? Do you need a particular software package? Some kind of certification? A bit more knowledge on the topic or area? NO PROBLEM! That's where Continuing Education will now help you in your quest. Many courses are offered in varying computer software applications, and often certification in varying skills can be completed in your off hours from work. Yep, you need re-training, but chances are you probably don't need a full diploma or degree. However, don't rule out the potential of taking a diploma or degree route - the possibilities really open up. And many of these courses are now offered online or at night - some seminars are also offered on Saturdays - and that may be all you need to get yourself in gear.
Check out your local Colleges as well as Community Centres. Don't forget the local high schools also offer many courses at night for adults - and we're not just talking high school courses. The "Y" also often offers courses. If you need certification - call up the local chapter of whatever you need - and they should have a list of when and where the certification is offered.
Don't be afraid to try getting a position in your new career even before you complete any training - the fact you have enrolled in an upgrade course will show your commitment; the company may want you before you complete the training - so they can have a say (and pay) in your training!
